A concrete-look surface can make a renovation feel calm, modern and deliberately finished. But microcement versus polished concrete is not simply a choice between two shades of grey. The materials are built differently, suit different substrates and create different outcomes underfoot. Choosing well early can avoid unnecessary demolition, budget pressure and disappointment once the work is complete.

For Melbourne homeowners, builders and architects, the right answer usually comes down to the existing surface, the room’s use, the desired finish and how much disruption the project can accommodate. Both options can look refined and wear well when specified and installed correctly. Neither is a one-size-fits-all solution.

Microcement versus polished concrete: the key difference

Polished concrete is an existing concrete slab, or a purpose-made concrete topping, that is mechanically ground, honed and polished. The finished appearance comes from working the concrete itself. Depending on the level of grinding, it may reveal fine sand, aggregate or a more heavily exposed stone finish.

Microcement is a hand-applied decorative cement-based coating, generally installed in several thin layers over a prepared substrate. At only a few millimetres thick, it can be applied over suitable concrete, screed, tiles, compressed fibre cement and other stable surfaces. A protective sealer system completes the finish and helps it resist water, staining and daily wear.

That difference in thickness matters. Polished concrete normally needs a sound slab and enough height allowance for preparation, grinding and the surrounding floor transitions. Microcement is particularly useful where keeping floor levels low is important, such as renovations connecting existing rooms, bathrooms, kitchens and stair landings.

The look and feel of each finish

Polished concrete has a more mineral, architectural character. Its variation is influenced by the original slab, the aggregate within it, previous repairs and the chosen grind. This gives every floor some individuality. It can be a strong choice for ground-floor living areas, new builds and spaces where a continuous slab is already part of the design.

Microcement offers a softer, more controlled concrete aesthetic. Trowel movement creates gentle tonal variation and subtle texture, rather than the aggregate exposure associated with polished concrete. It is available in a broad range of colours, from pale warm greys and sandy neutrals to charcoal, earthy tones and off-whites. The result can feel more tailored to the surrounding joinery, tiles and wall colours.

For bare-foot comfort, microcement generally feels less industrial because it is often used over an existing substrate with a more refined surface texture. Installation and renovation disruption

Installation requirements often decide the project before colour does. A polished concrete floor may require removal of existing coverings, adhesives and levelling compounds to expose the slab. The slab then needs assessment for cracks, patches, moisture and levels. Grinding equipment creates noise and dust, even where professional dust-control systems are used, so it is generally easiest to complete before cabinetry, final paintwork and move-in.

Microcement can reduce demolition where the existing surface is stable and properly prepared. For example, it may be installed over sound tiles rather than removing them, provided the substrate is thoroughly assessed, cleaned, primed and reinforced where required. This can save time and reduce the amount of building waste leaving site.

That does not mean microcement should be applied over any old surface. Loose tiles, movement in timber subfloors, active cracking, dampness and poor previous work must be addressed first. Thin decorative finishes reflect the quality of the preparation underneath them. A skilled applicator will inspect the substrate, set out joins and transitions, and use the appropriate primers, membranes and reinforcement for the system.

Wet areas require extra care. In bathrooms, laundries and shower zones, waterproofing must comply with the relevant Australian requirements before the decorative finish is applied. High-traffic entry points and commercial-style wear may call for a more carefully selected sealer or a different flooring material altogether.

Hairline cracks in a concrete slab can sometimes telegraph through either option. Microcement systems can incorporate reinforcement to help manage minor substrate movement, but no finish can permanently conceal significant structural movement. Honest substrate assessment is more valuable than promising a crack-free result where the building itself is moving.

Repairs are possible with both materials, although invisibility is not guaranteed. A repaired polished concrete area may differ in aggregate exposure or sheen. A microcement repair may show slight tonal variation because the finish is hand-applied. Keeping expectations realistic is part of achieving a result that still looks intentional and well finished.

Cost: what changes the price?

There is no reliable per-square-metre figure that applies to every job. Polished concrete can be cost-effective when a good-quality slab is already exposed and accessible. Costs increase when there are glued-down floor coverings, extensive crack repairs, difficult access, uneven levels or a request for deep aggregate exposure.

Microcement can be a practical option where it avoids removing sound tiles or rebuilding floor levels. However, it is a specialist multi-stage process, and pricing reflects careful preparation, hand application, curing time, sealing and detail work around drains, stairs, skirtings and joinery. Small rooms can have a higher rate per square metre because the same level of set-up and detailing is required.

The best comparison is based on the complete scope, not the initial material price. Include substrate repairs, removal works, moisture treatment, waterproofing, floor levelling, edge details and protection of completed surfaces. A clear quote should explain what is included and identify any conditions that need attention before work starts.

Which rooms suit each option?

Polished concrete is often at its best in new homes, extensions and open-plan ground floors where the slab can be designed as the finished surface. It suits homes aiming for an honest, hard-wearing material with visible aggregate or a refined honed look. It is also a sensible choice where the concrete slab is already in good condition and the project can accommodate grinding works.

Microcement suits renovations where design continuity matters. It can create a cohesive finish across floors, walls, bathroom vanities, fireplaces and selected joinery surrounds, giving smaller spaces a more open feel. Its low build-up makes it especially useful when matching existing thresholds and reducing the need to alter doors or fixtures.

For a family kitchen, either can work well, but think about how the household uses the space. A busy home with pets, children and heavy furniture may favour the hardness of polished concrete. A renovation seeking a warmer, quieter visual finish with minimal demolition may favour microcement. In either case, the right sealer, cleaning routine and protective measures under furniture matter.

Make the decision from the substrate out

Start with an inspection of what is already there. Is the slab sound enough to become the finished floor? Are existing tiles stable? Is there moisture, cracking or movement? Then consider the visual outcome: exposed aggregate and a more industrial character, or a fine, continuous hand-trowelled surface with greater colour control.
